COUPLES THERAPY IN BARCELONA

Couples therapy is a resource that can help you improve the communication with your partner and regain your connection, to work on conflicts that may arise, and find a way to deal with them.

The main objective is to strengthen one of the pillars of psychological health, promoting the well-being and happiness of each individual, so that it is reflected in your relationship.

In my journey as a couples therapist, I have been able to accompany many of my clients to resolve the conflicts in their relationship and strengthen the bond between them.

I am referring to the couple as two members for the sake of explaining what couples therapy is, even though the relationship may be made up of more than two members.

Psychotherapy for couples

Couples, one of the most talked-about topics in the world. Romantic relationships, whether they are during adolescence or adulthood, normally take up a space of great importance in our lives.

They make up the base from which a shared life begins and from which possibly a family is built.

¨Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.¨

-Antoine de Saint-Exupéry-

A couple does not seize to consist of two individuals, each with their own beliefs, values, and interests that sometimes do not completely coincide. As a result, more and more arguments may often begin to appear.

In addition, our partner may become our comfort zone, in which a lot of the times one feels comfortable to show both his/her best behaviour as well the worst.

Due to numerous reasons to stress out in life that each one goes through (living together, daily life routine, children´s responsibilities, work, family relations, friendships, etc.), it becomes easier for the frustration and the anger to burst out within the relationship, hurting the bond of this relationship, which gets worse and wears out over time.

What is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy is a therapeutic process that a couple decides to go through, due to problems and difficulties that arise in their relationship that prevent them from having a healthy and satisfying relationship.

The therapy begins by defining the conflicts that each member of the relationship presents, in order to reach an agreement on what they would like to resolve and improve in their relationship, whilst at the same time finding a common objective that they would like to achieve in therapy.

It is advisable that both members of the relationship take part in the therapy, seeing as this makes it much more fructiferous.

However, it is also possible to work on an individual basis to accomplish an improvement in the relationship.

The main goal is to strengthen one of the pillars on which our psychological health depends on, favouring wellbeing and happiness in both individuals.

Why do couples go to therapy?

Most couples wait too long to seek help, trying different ways to alleviate the problems in the process, which sometimes end up being useful, but other times they result in an increase in the levels of dissatisfaction and discomfort.

Couples therapy facilitates resources that can help solve various problems within the relationship.

It offers a safe and therapeutic environment, working as a team, promoting the expression and adequate communication, tackling the difficulties by dedicating the necessary time and attention.

Couples therapy is not only useful when there are problems in the relationship, but also when one of the members is going through a difficult time and needs more attention, which consequently may affect their partner in a negative way.

Defining needs, adjusting expectations, improving communication, and training abilities to use resources in order to solve conflicts, are a few of the most important aspects that couples therapy deals with.

Problems that can be subject to therapy

  • Communication problems
  • Problems when living together
  • Infidelity
  • Jealousy
  • Sexual dissatisfaction
  • Sex-related difficulties
  • Problems with extensive families
  • Aggressiveness and violence (physical or verbal)
  • Emotional dependency
  • Difficult divorce/separation process
  • Problems dealing with children
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Other mental issues
  • Illness

There are many problems that are triggered by communication failures in the couple, which in turn can lead to difficulties in their sex life. Although it should be clarified that sex therapy is also carried out individually, this can be complementary in couples therapy.

It is convenient when one or both members of the relationship detect that their sexual relations are unsatisfactory due to some specific dysfunction or because, in general, they feel there is disagreement.

Making the decision to receive therapy can seem like a big step or a difficult decision, as it means admitting that things are not perfect, which is often difficult to recognise. Take the first step to work on your relationship and get the satisfaction you are looking for.
